Our first proper look at Angel Has Fallen reveals some classic action tropes, some dodgy drone swarm CGI and Gerard Butler being Gerard Butler – but if you’ve made it through the first two movies – Olympus Has Fallen and London Has Fallen, you’ll know all this just adds to the inexplicable franchise’s charm.
Butler is reprising his role as beleaguered Secret Service Agent Mike Banning for the threequel, because the president is in danger, dammit, and someone has got to step up and save the day. Trouble is, this time Mike has been set up to take the fall for this week’s calamity, but he’s not going to take it lying down. He’ll take it running, jumping, making emotional pleas and generally being a hard man. Also starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Lance Reddick, Tim Blake Nelson, Piper Perabo, Nick King Nolte (we only address Mr. Nolte by his full real name here) and Danny Huston.
Here’s the official synopsis…
When there is an assassination attempt on U.S. President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), his trusted confidant, Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), is wrongfully accused and taken into custody. After escaping from capture, he becomes a man on the run and must evade his own agency and outsmart the FBI in order to find the real threat to the President. Desperate to uncover the truth, Banning turns to unlikely allies to help clear his name, keep his family from harm and save the country from imminent danger.
Angel Has Fallen will be released on 23rd August.
