The 2009 Video Music Awards will have a permanent place in the history of pop culture as Taylor Swift‘s acceptance speech was interrupted by Kanye West to shower Beyoncé with praise.
While it seemed that everyone had moved on from the incident since then, Swift and West reignited their beef in 2016 when the “Famous” pseudo-diss track of the rapper dropped, and it was revealed that the songstress allegedly lied not to approve the lyrics. The VMAs’ failure still weighs strongly on West and Swift, but what about the Lemonade mogul? While I doubt that we will ever hear the story side of the notoriously tight-lipped star, we now know how Bey felt right after the stage was stormed by West.
Former chief of MTV Van Toffler on all-things VMAs had the inside scoop in 2009, and now he’s spilling the tea. It is also moments after West took the stage to tell Swift that she isn’t worth it, as did his pal Beyoncé, which went for winning Video Of The Year. Van Toffler disclosed that he had been backstage minutes after Swift got the “You Belong with Me” Best Female Video Award which wins Bey’s video “Single Ladies.”
The situation left both women upset, according to the one-time chief of MTV. He said: “It came out of the trick to see it was all correct, Taylor and her mother were crying hysterically,” Van Toffler said, “When the Kanye and Taylor got to the stages that one year, it turned out that Taylor had to go on stage for a song five minutes after that. I didn’t know what to say. I went backstage, Beyoncé was crying, too. I’m not always beautiful with emotions.”
But Bey and Swift pulled it together and enjoyed the rest of their VMAs. Bey even graciously brought Swift to the stage to complete her speech of recognition, giving her the chance to thank the fans. Unfortunately, eight long years after that fateful night, it seems the 2009 VMAs legend is still alive.
