A Nevada man killed a 14-year-old child because it could not accept the sexuality of the teen, the boy’s former mother-in-law informed local media networks.
The 53-year-old Wendell Melton, in Henderson Nevada, where he was murdered last Thursday, shot his son Giovanni Melton in the apartment where he resided alone.
The Henderson Police Department said in a Facebook post that Melton has been arrested and “booked to the Henderson Detention Center” on the scene on charges of open murder, child abuse and possession of firearms.
Sonja Jones, the former foster mom of the teen, said that the boy had been “abused long, many years physically and mentally” and she believed that because of his sexual orientation he was killed.
“He hated his son being gay,” said Jones of Melton. “I’m sure he’d rather have the dead son inside his mind than the homosexual son.” Jones said that she understood Melton had captured Giovanni “with the boyfriend before and pulled his weapon out of him.”
As a result of an “active investigation,” the Henderson Police Department refused to provide additional information concerning the fact that Wendell Melton had obtained a defense lawyer, reports said.
Jaime Grant, PFLAG National Executive Director, an LGBTQ family, and partner organization, has stated that the death of Giovanni forms part of wider society.
“We have a masculinity crisis in this country–this report and the relentless reports on sexual attack and weapons violence are obvious across the board,” Grant said in a statement.
“There are many regulatory messages that boys learn when they grow up to fill their emotions, police other men’s gender and sexuality, assert dominance from the chamber to the bedroom, and they also become parents in their life.”
