On Wednesday, a school teacher from a boarding school appeared in court in Ukraine after supposedly trying to sell a 13-year-old schoolgirl under her supervision for more than $10,000.
Galyna Kovalenko, 52-year-old, who has been accused of human trafficking charges, and will face up to 15 years in jail if found guilty of trafficking the girl who was her student at the state boarding school.
Galyna Kovalenko denies the charges and she says that he is set up.
She was confined on Monday morning after apparently being “caught red-handed as she took the girl from her boarding school, led her to the buyers and received money”, Interior Minister Arsen Avakov said in a post on social media.
State boarding schools in Ukraine are customarily in a poor position and the students come from impoverished backgrounds.
The teacher was allegedly “had been working for nearly a year on this project to sell the 13-year-old girl”, Arsen Avakov said in a statement.
Arsen Avakov said in another social media post that “the buyer even asked about child’s state of wellness, hinting at organ removal and she (Kovalenko) agreed to provide the girl’s photos and medical report for an additional 1,000 hryvnias ($28 US dollars)”
Before appearing in court on Wednesday, the teacher pleaded her innocence to reporters.
“I do not admit liability. Someone is trying to set me up,” Galyna Kovalenko said.
