A California man was sentenced to 11 years in prison for killing his former roommate whose body was discovered in the wall of their apartment 6 years after she was reported missing.
Randolph E. Garbutt, 47, presented guilty last month to one offense count of intentional manslaughter in the death of 37-year-old Raven Campbell. Campbell, who had a developmental disability, was reported missing in June 2009 after she was last seen leaving her apartment in Lomita, Calif.
But her body wasn’t found until 2015 when family members received a tip that the woman might be buried in a closet behind the stairs of the apartment she once lived in.
Police shoveled Campbell’s body from behind the wall and the cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head. Prosecutors say Garbutt beat Campbell to death with a hammer.
according to the Los Angeles County jail records, Garbutt was arrested seven months later, Some of Campbell’s family members said the sentence was too short given the cruelty of the crime.
