Detroit authorities have charged a teenage mother with stabbing her one-day-old baby to death and hiding its remains in her purse before storing it in a closet.
The 16-year-old mother was charged on Wednesday with second-degree murder, eight months after the child’s birth and death. She delivered the infant in a toilet on February 21, 2019.
Detroit police said that the mother covered the newborn with a towel before delivering multiple stab wounds to its neck. She didn’t stop her cruel intentions to stabbing and later placing its dead body in a purse and then moving it to her bedroom closet.
The girl returned home and later collapsed, leading her mother to take her to the hospital. Once there, the girl is alleged to have recounted the story and police searched her property on Agnes Street where they found the baby.
The cause and manner of death were listed as ‘multiple incised wounds to the neck. A police report from February said that the baby had been stillborn though this has now been disproved by the medical examiner.
Police are also looking for the girl’s boyfriend for the possibility of charging him for getting physical with a minor.
