A 33-year-old Bremerton mother named Ashley Renee Pugh charged on Thursday with offence assault is accused of breaking her 4-month-old daughter’s leg.
She denied hurting the girl and said she believed the injury was related to a medical condition that has affected her legs since birth.
But the law enforcers acknowledged that Pugh assaulted the girl based on doctors finding the injury was non-accidental. Along with Pugh’s statements that she was the baby’s sole caregiver and no others had been around her without Pugh. Pugh lived with the baby and another daughter, 19 months old. Pugh said she slept in a king-sized bed with her two daughters.
Adding to the suspicions of investigators was that Pugh had missed three doctor’s appointments for the girl though the baby was losing weight.
In August, Pugh brought the girl to the doctor after noticing that one of her legs was swollen but she did not take the baby to the hospital after doctors found the baby’s leg was broken. The baby’s other leg may have been injured as well, as a “healing injury” could not be ruled out.
