Blizzard Entertainment has just published Overwatch 2, the sequel to its successful team shooter Overwatch, onstage at Blizzcon 2019. Three years ago The original Overwatch released and while Blizzard has remained to expand the game with a new character, maps, and game modes, but it has not gotten a major update like this in the lifetime of this game before.
By implementing an actual story mode, the sequel will see to expand on the lore that Blizzard has gradually been developing for the Overwatch universe over the past few years with in-game content and refined cinematic shorts. It happened after the variety of short films that Blizzard has issued so far, observing the heroes of Overwatch battle against Null Sector, an invading robot force.
Originally the game was primarily a PvP multiplayer experience but the sequel seems to be emphasizing cooperative PvE content that will see gamers battle against a multitude of computer enemies in both story levels. Characters will also be able to level up their heroes and customize their abilities.
It has still PvP modes and maps, too, with Blizzard assuring a new core “Push” mode with new maps and heroes who will be added to the existing 31 heroes that are already returning which two of those new heroes are Echo, a robot featured in Overwatch’s Blizzcon short last year, and Sojourn, which Blizzard exec Jeff Kaplan teased but wouldn’t give any more details on.. It has also still heavily feature six-versus-six team combat, similar to the previous game.
The company is taking an unconventional path for the upcoming version of the game ensuring a shared multiplayer platform where current Overwatch players will able to battle against Overwatch 2 players in PvP multiplayer. The company also affirmed that it proposes to maintain all of the players’ existing unlocked cosmetics from the first game. But there’s no word yet as to when players should expect Overwatch 2 to be released. The company has only published that the sequel is “in development” and more details will be coming soon.
