Zachary Winston, Albion College student, and basketball player died on Saturday night after he stepped in front of an Amtrak train.
Amtrak’s Wolverine Train 355 hit Winston on the tracks near Erie Street in Albion.
Albion Public Safety chief Scott Kipp said that Winston purposely stepped in front of the train. Winston stepped in front of the train as it approached a pedestrian crosswalk just past the Erie Street crossing.
The train was delayed over 3 hours at the scene until the inquiry was finished.
Albion College President Mauri Ditzler issued a penned statement regarding Winston’s death, according to the sources.
“As a community, our hearts are broken today as we share the news of the death of one of our students, Zachary Winston,” the statement explained. “Zach was a finance major, a student in the Gerstacker Institute for Business and Management, and a part of the Albion College men’s basketball team. Zach was a known as a leader who was well known across every facet of our campus.
“As a college, we have given possibilities for students, faculty, and staff to get counseling and support in the challenging days ahead,” the statement remained. “We require all students to understand they are not alone.”
