A Twenty-seven-year-old woman was killed and 3 other people were severely injured after their boat crashed off Long Island Sunday, November 10, evening Suffolk County police department said in the statement.
Suffolk County police department state the 39-foot Cobalt boat hit a bulkhead near the entrance to James Creek in Mattituck around 9 p.m. 2 of the boat passengers were brought to Peconic Bay Medical Center in an ambulance and 2 had to be flown to Stony Brook University Hospital in a helicopter.
Kelley Blanchard of Riverhead was later declared dead at the hospital, the police officials said in a statement.
Frank Distefano, 48-year-old, of East Northport, was distinguished as the operator of the boat and charged with boating while under influence of alcohol, while additional charges expected to be filed. He was released and will be summoned later this month, prosecutors stated in a statement.
Megan Blanchard, 29-year-old, of New Suffolk, and Nick Soullas, 41-year-old, of Jamesport, were the other two injured passengers. Megan Blanchard is the sibling of the victim killed in the boat crash and was undergone surgery on Monday, November 11 afternoon.
Southold Town Police strengthened that the boat was moving at a “significant speed” at the moment of the crash, evidenced by the damage to the forward end of the boat and to the bulkhead.
An examination is ongoing regarding the incident.
