A babysitter who physically molested a 6-year-old girl on Christmas Day and again on New Year’s Day will be released from jail in just 20 months.
53-year-old Paul Rognvald Groundwater was convicted to three and a half years jail, suspended after 20 months, for the crimes in Brisbane District Court on Tuesday.
The court learned that Groundwater overpowered the girl to perform lewd acts on him while her parents were at a Christmas party in December 2016 and again on New Year’s Day 2017 when they were at Archerfield speedway.
Despite declaring not guilty during the 4-day trial, the court discovered Groundwater guilty of 2 counts of physical molestation and a further four counts of indecent treatment of a child under 12.
Prosecutor Steven Dickson told the accused had shown no shame, and the girl was so youthful she doesn’t fully assume the seriousness of what has happened to her.
He also told the girl’s family had been influenced by the offending, blaming themselves, and being bothered by stress, anxiety, and anger.
Defense barrister Joshua Jones said that Groundwater had been the victim of bullying in the two months he has been in custody.
‘He has spent many days in solitary confinement guarded against those that have been physically assaulting him and those that have attempted to force him and his family.
Judge Nathan Jarro told the offending was blatant and predatory when handing down his sentence.
