The National Aeronautics And Space Administration (NASA) has identified the asteroid as 2020 AQ1. The asteroid flew past through our planet at an alarming pace of over 61,500 miles per hour.
As per the reports, the Near-Earth Object (NEO) was huge enough to ruin an entire city if it would have collided with our planet.
The space agency closely monitored a space rock with an expected diameter of about 755. With this size, this asteroid was larger than the Golden Gate Bridge tower or more than twice the height of London’s Big Ben.
The reports stated that this asteroid was advancing towards our planet and was supposed to fly past through our planet on Monday.
Researchers stated that the asteroid was advancing towards the planet at a speed of over 61,500 miles per hour. The Near-Earth Object (NEO) was huge enough to destroy an entire city if it conflicts with the Earth.
The European Space Agency (ESA) identified 21,655 NEO space rocks and 109 NEO comets.
The space rock was expected to hurtle past through the planet on what astronomers described as a “close approach” trajectory.
NASA’s trackers calculated that the space rock supposedly measured somewhere in the range of 328 feet -754 feet. With this size, the asteroid was more than twice the height of London’s Big Ben.
NASA’s Planetary Defence Officer Lindley Johnson stated, “These asteroids have been well observed, and their orbits are very well known.”
“Both of these asteroids are passing at about 14 lunar distances from the Earth, or about 3.5 million miles away, but small asteroids pass by Earth this close all the time,” he further added.
