Captain Marvel 2 is ultimately on its way in 2022, but the venture will go ahead without the directors of the first film.
Original Directors Not Returning For Sequel
After Captain Marvel earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office, a sequel confirmed despite not being involved in the Phase 4 lineup shown at San Diego Comic-Con. Now, though, there are lots of new buzzes and detailed data to discuss.
Marvel’s first solo female-led superhero movie was helmed by the directorial duo of Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. While the two mostly operated on tv shows together, such as The Affair and Billions, they also collaborated on films like It’s a Funny Story and Sugar. Not only did they direct Captain Marvel, but they also co-wrote the screenplay along with some others.
Given the level of their engagement in such a big project, it’s quite a shock that they may not be engaging as actively in its sequel.
Captain Marvel 2 will be changing hands on both the writing and directing fronts. Not only has WandaVision staff writer Megan McDonnell been preferred by Marvel to write the screenplay instead, for which she is now in the final stage of negotiations, but Boden and Fleck will not be directing the movie either.
Previous Directors In Talks To Direct A Disney+ Series
While Marvel is expecting to discover a female director for Captain Marvel 2, it at least sounds like the company didn’t part on bad terms with the earlier team. Boden and Fleck are allegedly in discussions to direct a Disney+ series – although there’s no information on what is the plot of the show.
There’s no official word on why Boden and Fleck aren’t coming back. Whatever the reason may be in Captain Marvel 2’s case, some names in the credits may be a good thing behind the scenes. Fans may understandably feel sick at ease with the various changes happening, but the ultimate product will speak for itself one way or another.
