4K resolution means a picture made up of roughly 3840 by 2160 pixels — about four times as many pixels as Full HD 1080p — which can show much finer detail on a screen large enough and close enough to reveal it. The “4K” name comes from the horizontal pixel count being close to 4,000, and on TVs and streaming services it is used interchangeably with “Ultra HD” or “UHD.”

How much sharper is 4K than 1080p?

On paper, a lot. Full HD is 1920 by 1080, which works out to just over two million pixels. 4K UHD is 3840 by 2160, or roughly 8.3 million pixels — four times the total, because both the width and the height double. Those extra pixels can render finer textures, smaller text, and cleaner edges. But “can” is the operative word: whether you actually see the difference depends on the size of your screen, how far away you sit, and the quality of the source. Is 4K the same as UHD?

In everyday use, yes, but there is a technical wrinkle. “4K” originated in digital cinema, where the DCI 4K standard is 4096 by 2160 — slightly wider than what home TVs use. Consumer televisions and streaming are actually 3840 by 2160, which is more precisely called Ultra HD (UHD). Because 3840 is close to 4,000, marketers simply call it 4K, and that has stuck. So when you buy a “4K TV,” you are getting UHD resolution; true DCI 4K is a cinema specification you will rarely encounter at home.

What do you need to watch 4K?

To see genuine 4K, every link in the chain has to support it:

  • A 4K screen — a TV or monitor with a UHD panel.

Does 4K include HDR?

When is 4K actually worth it?

4K pays off when the conditions let you resolve the extra detail. Bigger screens help most: on a large TV, the individual pixels of 1080p can become visible, and 4K smooths them out.
