Why 16:9 became the standard
16:9 (1.78:1) is the shape of nearly every modern television, computer display, and phone screen in landscape. Because it sits between the old 4:3 television shape and the very wide cinema ratios, 16:9 can display most content with relatively small adjustments. What is 21:9, and is it a real film ratio?
21:9 is a marketing term for ultrawide displays, mostly computer monitors and some phones. Its true ratio is closer to 2.37:1, which is very near the cinema scope ratio of 2.39:1. That closeness is the appeal: on a 21:9 ultrawide monitor, a scope film can fill the screen edge to edge without the black bars you would see on a 16:9 display. Strictly speaking, filmmakers do not shoot to “21:9”; they shoot to established ratios like 2.39:1, and ultrawide screens simply happen to match that shape well. So 21:9 is best understood as a display format inspired by cinema rather than a filming standard of its own.
Why do movies have black bars?
Black bars appear when the shape of the content does not match the shape of your screen, and the device preserves the original proportions rather than stretching or cropping the picture. There are two kinds:
- Letterboxing: horizontal black bars along the top and bottom. This happens when a wide image, such as a 2.39:1 film, is shown on a less-wide screen, like a 16:9 TV. The bars keep the film from being stretched taller than intended.

Does aspect ratio affect picture quality?
Aspect ratio and resolution are different things, and it helps to keep them separate. Aspect ratio is about shape; resolution, like 4K, is about how many pixels make up the image. A movie can be very high resolution and still be letterboxed, because the bars come from shape mismatch, not from a lack of detail. That said, aspect ratio does affect how much of your screen the picture uses. A scope film letterboxed on a 16:9 TV will not fill the whole panel, so you see slightly less lit area even though the image quality within the frame is unchanged. Understanding the difference means you will never mistake intentional black bars for a broken or low-quality video again.
Choosing to embrace the bars
Some viewers dislike black bars and set their TVs to zoom or stretch the image to fill the screen. Doing so either crops off the edges of the picture or distorts everyone into the wrong proportions.
